Herald Citizen – Child helps educate others about autism

COOKEVILLE — Nine-year-old Austin Fry loves to talk. So does his mom, Cookeville attorney Dawn Fry.

The mother-son duo are especially vocal when it comes to a topic that hits close to home — autism.

At age 2, Austin was diagnosed with the neurological disorder, which hinders socialization and communication skills and is characterized by certain behaviors that can include hand flapping, rocking, random speech and sensitivity to light, sound and touch.

His mother explained that autism is often misunderstood by the general public and can be particularly vexing in emergency situations. That’s why she and Austin have made it their mission to educate others about the condition, especially those who are first on the scene in times of crisis, including rescue squad members, police officers and firefighters.
